As co-founder of the Solis Foundation, my heart is to walk with the poor in Lodwar, Kenya in a way that allows them to be active agents in overcoming their poverty. Our understanding of poverty shapes our understanding of development. Defining poverty holistically enables us to approach development holistically. This does not mean that we are comprehensive in our approach (no one organization can do it all), therefore we seek to partner with many others.
The particular area that we are focusing on is developing and training new entreprenuers by giving them small grants that enable them to start small businesses. We have learned a lot from the Villiage Entriprise Fund who has been doing this for over twenty years. Local Kenyans are designing our approach within a basic framework, as well as running the program locally. In this way we allow them to be the primary agents in their own development. Please visit the Solis Foundation site to learn more. You can also read more about our approach to development by reading my paper Shalom Makers: Development in the Way of Christ - A More Human(e) Way. You will find the essay near the bottom of the page.
