"Vocation is where our greatest passion meets the world's greatest need." - Frederick Buechner
That statement is profound and worth pondering if you desire to discover your calling in life. We are all writing the story of our life each day that we live. We write our story in the daily grind of living as well as those special, intense moments of guidance or opportunity. And as we write our story, when we get to the end, we don't want it to be shallow. We don't want to sell out for something less. Rather, when we get to the end of our lives, we want our life to have been rich, meaningful, honoring to God, and helpful to others.
The worlds greatest need may be evident, so how do you discern your greatest passion? Parker Palmer in Let Your Life Speak says, "Vocation does not come from willfulness. It comes from listening. I must listen to my life and try to understand what it is truly about – quite apart from what I would like it to be about – or my life will never represent anything real in the world, no matter how earnest my intentions. That insight is hidden in the world vocation itself, which is rooted in the Latin for "voice." Vocation does not mean a goal that I pursue. It means a calling that I hear. Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am."
